Los Angeles PPL 2026: Mexico Waves and DC Matrix win titles

Mexico Waves won the men’s title and DC Matrix took the women’s championship at the PPL’s Los Angeles debut, August 13–16 at Barker Hangar. David Gala and Maximiliano Arce beat Florida’s Luis Hernández Quesada and Juan Ignacio de Pascual 6–4, 3–6, [10–2]. Marina Guinart and Araceli Martínez Ibáñez defeated Houston’s Ariadna Canellas Rodero and María Eulalia Rodríguez 6–3, 2–6, [11–9]. The two finals reached the same deciding phase but ended with very different margins. Toronto’s men and New York’s women claimed third, also through match tiebreaks. The accompanying PPL II competition ran separately at Padel Up in Culver City, with its scoreboards kept outside the main-event championship totals.

Men’s final: Mexico’s decisive last phase

Championship analysis

Mexico Waves won the men’s championship through a finish much more one-sided than the first two sets. David Gala and Maximiliano Arce defeated Luis Hernández Quesada and Juan Ignacio de Pascual 6–4, 3–6, [10–2]. The first two phases left the match level, with Florida having won the second set. The final phase changed the scale of the separation. Mexico’s ten points against two settled the title in a match tiebreak, not a conventional third set. Official source ↗

The opening set gave Gala and Arce an initial advantage at six games to four. Florida’s response was stronger in regular-game margin: six games to three in the second. That meant Florida had ten games across the first two sets and Mexico nine. As in other split-set matches, total regular games did not determine the winner. The deciding format reset the immediate scoring task, and the Waves won that phase by eight points. The verified record supports the contrast between a balanced set score and a clear decider. Official source ↗

Mexico and Florida entered the championship after winning both of their group matches. The official event table lists the Waves as group seed one and the Goats as seed two. Both won 80% of their group sets, while Mexico’s rounded game and point shares were 63% and 55%, compared with Florida’s 56% and 52%. These percentages describe the qualifying matches, not the final. They show two unbeaten finalists with Mexico holding the stronger margins in the earlier program. Florida nevertheless won the second championship set and accumulated more regular games across the final’s first two sets. Gala and Arce had to settle that new contest through the points decider. The table gives Mexico 25 event points and Florida 19 after Podium Day. Their first and second places follow the championship outcome; the group seeds describe the route into it. Official source ↗

Analysis: the event’s most striking championship number is therefore 10–2. It is reasonable to describe Mexico as decisive in the final scoring phase because the recorded margin is large. It would be less precise to describe the entire match as a rout, given Florida’s completed second-set win. The Goats successfully forced a decider before losing it. Keeping those two observations together gives the runner-up pair credit for its response without diminishing the Waves’ finish. Official source ↗

The individual match sheet resolves an important gap in the league’s brief event recap. Florida’s final players were Hernández Quesada and De Pascual. A general roster could not establish that fact by itself, but the scoreboard identifies the pair opposite Gala and Arce. The four names connect this title match to the chronological results below. Mexico’s franchise is based outside the United States; winning an event in California does not make it a U.S. team or the event’s home club. Official source ↗

The trophy is recorded here as the Los Angeles men’s title. The final does not, on its own, establish a season championship, a Miami qualification place or an award for an individual player. Those outcomes require separate league evidence. The account also leaves the cause of the tiebreak margin open: no service percentage, return percentage or specific shot sequence is inferred from 10–2. Mexico took the first set, Florida forced the deciding phase, and Gala and Arce won it convincingly. That is the complete verified scoring arc of the championship; tactical detail will require reviewed footage or substantive official statistics. Official source ↗

Women’s final: DC wins the extra-distance decider

Championship analysis

DC Matrix’s women won a championship that required the deciding tiebreak to extend beyond ten points. Marina Guinart and Araceli Martínez Ibáñez beat Ariadna Canellas Rodero and María Eulalia Rodríguez 6–3, 2–6, [11–9]. Houston’s second-set victory restored a one-set-all score after DC took the first. The finishing two-point margin then separated the Matrix from the Volts. It is the exact ending, rather than a vague description of a tight match, that defines this final. Official source ↗

DC won six games to three in the opening set, but Houston won six to two in the next. Across those regular sets, Houston accumulated nine games and DC eight. Neither aggregate decided the title. The match tiebreak did. An 11–9 finish records twenty deciding points and a two-point margin. It also distinguishes the women’s final from Mexico’s 10–2 men’s finish at the same event. Both championship matches required a decider, yet the numerical experience of that phase was very different. Official source ↗

Houston was group seed one and DC seed two in the official snapshot. Both had won two group matches, and both had an 80% group-set share. Houston’s earlier margins were stronger: 69% of games and 57% of points, against DC’s 59% and 55%. Those rounded figures exclude the final, so they do not reveal who served or returned better in the championship itself. They do establish that the Volts arrived with an unbeaten record and substantial qualifying margins. DC’s title therefore changed the ordering established by group seeds, with Houston finishing second and the Matrix first. The championship’s 11–9 decider supplied that reversal after the pairs split the regular sets. DC received 25 event points and Houston 19 in the displayed post-podium table, whose win-loss and percentage columns remain limited to group competition. Official source ↗

Analysis: Houston’s ability to force the extra phase is a central part of the result. A 2–6 second set for the eventual winners is not evidence of uninterrupted control by DC. The completed score shows the Volts moving the contest back to parity. Conversely, the final outcome belongs to Guinart and Martínez Ibáñez, who won the phase that settled the trophy. The data support a set-level change in momentum and a close ending; they do not support a claim about which partner altered return position or played a particular overhead. Official source ↗

The match sheet also answers who represented Houston in the final. Canellas Rodero and Rodríguez are the two players shown in the scoreboard. That appearance evidence is kept separate from the franchise’s broader women’s roster. DC’s winning pair was already named in the league’s short recap, while the detailed sheet completes the opposing pair. This is why the archive cites the match itself alongside the event report: the two sources supply different levels of detail. Official source ↗

DC’s women left Barker Hangar first and Houston second. The bronze fixture was a separate contest in which New York defeated Florida, so those teams do not appear here as inferred semifinal losers. The regular-season event moved from group play to podium matches. Within that format, the final delivered a measured story: an opening advantage for DC, a strong second-set answer from Houston and an extended deciding finish for the Matrix. No quote, match point saved or rally sequence is added to make the ending more dramatic than the authenticated score already makes it. Official source ↗

Day by day

Day 1 · Group-stage report

Toronto swept Las Vegas on opening night, while Los Angeles and New York split their meeting. The Atlantics’ women won in straight sets, but the Beat’s men recovered from an opening-set defeat to finish an 11–9 match tiebreak. That contest gave the first day a different finish from Toronto’s two straight-set victories. All four outcomes belonged to group competition, with neither the championship field nor the eventual podium order settled by Thursday’s program. Official source ↗

Toronto’s men took both sets at seven games, first 7–5 and then 7–6, giving their opening win a closer regular-game shape than the women’s 6–0, 6–4 result. Los Angeles’ men meanwhile lost the first set 4–6 before winning the second 6–2. The resulting match tiebreak extended to eleven points for the winners and nine for New York. A club-level split and a Toronto sweep emerged from those separate contests. They were four group results, with the later event champions still to establish their own routes. Official source ↗

In the men’s group stage, Toronto Polar Bears’s Mario Huete Hernandez and Alejandro "Alex" Ruiz defeated Agustin Torre and Guillermo Jimenez Cagigas of Las Vegas Smash, 7–5, 7–6. A regular-set tiebreak featured in the straight-set result; its individual point score is not specified here. Official source ↗

In the men’s group stage, Los Angeles Beat’s Antonio Fernandez Cano and Leonel "Tolito" Aguirre defeated Ignacio Vilarino and Javier Martinez of New York Atlantics, 4–6, 6–2, [11–9 match tiebreak]. The eventual winners recovered from losing the opening set. The bracketed finish is a match tiebreak, separate from the two regular sets. Official source ↗

In the women’s group stage, Toronto Polar Bears’s Jana Montes Cabruja and Noemi Aguilar defeated Agueda Perez Ortiz and Jimena Velasco of Las Vegas Smash, 6–0, 6–4. The winning pair completed the result in two regular sets, without a deciding match tiebreak. Official source ↗

In the women’s group stage, New York Atlantics’s Sofia Saiz Vallejo and Marta Talavan defeated Victoria Iglesias Segador and Julia Polo Bautista of Los Angeles Beat, 6–4, 6–4. The winning pair completed the result in two regular sets, without a deciding match tiebreak. Official source ↗

Day 2 · Group-stage report

Friday widened the Los Angeles field with Mexico, Houston, Florida, DC, Miami and San Diego in the main match program. Toronto and Las Vegas returned after their Thursday meetings. The longer slate put both eventual men’s finalists and both eventual women’s finalists into the qualifying story. Those group results still needed Saturday’s concluding session before the podium field was complete. The individual reports below follow the actual partnerships and completed scores for each division. Official source ↗

In the men’s group stage, Mexico Waves’s David Gala and Maximiliano Arce defeated Facundo Lopez and Alberto Garcia Trabanco of Houston Volts, 6–1, 6–7, [10–4 match tiebreak]. Day 3 · Group-stage report

Saturday completed the group slate. The resulting championship fixtures placed Mexico opposite Florida in the men’s division and DC opposite Houston in the women’s. Toronto and DC entered the men’s third-place match; New York and Florida entered the women’s third-place match. Those assignments establish the path from group competition to the podium session. There is no need to add a semifinal round that the regular-season fixture record does not contain. Official source ↗

In the men’s group stage, New York Atlantics’s Ignacio Vilarino and Javier Martinez defeated Alejandro "Alex" Arroyo and Valentino Libaak of DC Matrix, 6–7, 7–5, [10–4 match tiebreak]. Day 4 · Podium Sunday

All four main podium matches went to deciding match tiebreaks. The finals had winners who took the opening set and then lost the second. The third-place winners did the reverse, recovering from opening-set defeats. The common format made the contrasts easy to see: Mexico finished with a 10–2 margin, DC needed 11–9, Toronto won 10–5 and New York won 10–7. These were four distinct competitive results, rather than one generic account of a final day. Official source ↗

The bronze winners both had to recover from losing the first set. Toronto answered DC’s 6–3 opener with a 6–3 set of its own, then took the match tiebreak 10–5. New York’s women had a longer second-set assignment: after losing 4–6, they won 7–6 to earn the decider against Florida, then finished it 10–7. The four main podium deciders thus ranged from a two-point championship separation to Mexico’s eight-point finish. Each had its own set progression; sharing the same deciding format did not make their paths identical. Official source ↗

In the men’s championship, Mexico Waves’s David Gala and Maximiliano Arce defeated Luis Hernandez Quesada and Juan Ignacio de Pascual of Florida Goats, 6–4, 3–6, [10–2 match tiebreak]. The losing side answered the opening-set defeat to force a deciding contest. The bracketed finish is a match tiebreak, separate from the two regular sets. Official source ↗

In the men’s 3rd place, Toronto Polar Bears’s Mario Huete Hernandez and Alejandro "Alex" Ruiz defeated Mario del Castillo and Valentino Libaak of DC Matrix, 3–6, 6–3, [10–5 match tiebreak]. The eventual winners recovered from losing the opening set. The bracketed finish is a match tiebreak, separate from the two regular sets. Official source ↗

In the women’s championship, DC Matrix’s Araceli Martinez Ibanez and Marina Guinart Espana defeated Ariadna Canellas Rodero and Maria Eulalia Rodriguez of Houston Volts, 6–3, 2–6, [11–9 match tiebreak]. The losing side answered the opening-set defeat to force a deciding contest. The bracketed finish is a match tiebreak, separate from the two regular sets. Official source ↗

In the women’s 3rd place, New York Atlantics’s Sofia Saiz Vallejo and Marta Talavan defeated Noa Canovas and Carolina Orsi of Florida Goats, 4–6, 7–6, [10–7 match tiebreak]. Standout performances and season context

Barker Hangar in Santa Monica hosted the PPL’s first Los Angeles event. The league reported ten competing franchises and accompanying activity around local clubs, with a separate development competition in Culver City. These event venues are not treated as permanent franchise training sites. Official source ↗

Toronto’s Mario Huete Hernández and Alex Ruiz recovered against DC’s Mario del Castillo and Valentino Libaak, 3–6, 6–3, [10–5], for third. New York’s Sofía Saiz Vallejo and Marta Talaván recovered against Florida’s Noa Cánovas and Carolina Orsi, 4–6, 7–6, [10–7]. The losers of those contests finished fourth. Official source 1 ↗ Official source 2 ↗

Los Angeles produced two main PPL championships that reached a match tiebreak, with markedly different margins at the finish. Mexico Waves defeated Florida Goats in the men’s title match, while DC Matrix beat Houston Volts for the women’s championship. Both finalists in each division had won a regular set before the deciding tiebreak settled the result. Official source 1 ↗ Official source 2 ↗

David Gala and Maximiliano Arce took the men’s opening set 6–4 for Mexico. Florida’s Luis Hernandez Quesada and Juan Ignacio De Pascual answered by winning the second 6–3, bringing the match level in sets. Mexico then won the match tiebreak 10–2. That eight-point margin made the decider the clearest separation in a championship that had previously swung between the teams; the score establishes that change in the result without telling us which shots or tactics produced it. Official source ↗

The women’s finish was much closer. DC’s Araceli Martinez Ibanez and Marina Guinart Espana won the first set 6–3, but Houston’s Ariadna Canellas Rodero and Maria Eulalia Rodriguez returned a 6–2 second set. DC prevailed 11–9 in the match tiebreak, a two-point margin that contrasts with Mexico’s decisive men’s finish. The 11–9 belongs to the separate match tiebreak: it should not be presented as an ordinary third-set game score. Official source ↗

PPL II had its own championship matches and winners. Florida’s Vinny Di Francesco and Miguel Briega Ramos defeated San Diego’s Ivo Alem Andenmatten and Daniel Diaz 7–6, 6–3 in the men’s final. Las Vegas’s Anna Tapias Cortiles and Luicelena Perez beat Toronto’s Jordana Lujan and Carla Rodriguez Sanchez 7–6, 6–2 in the women’s final. Each PPL II champion won in two regular sets, giving the development competition a different conclusion from the two main PPL finals. These results belong in their own competition record, alongside rather than combined with the main league championships. Official source 1 ↗ Official source 2 ↗
